Birefringence
Bök, Christian (1966 - ) The piece is a reaction to the beautiful poem by Christian Bök about light and its hidden world of refraction. This text spoke immediately to the type of music I wanted to write, with tons of light and colour, all shining at different angles, here represented by the right hand of the piano. Like the poetry, the music attempts to be active and calm at the same time. See in silk-screened kimonos blowtorch scars on metal, wings of iridescent insects, the aurora borealis. See in stained-glass windows spotlight gels for sunlight, broken slides of hoarfrost crystals magnified through polarizers. See in gasoline rainbows eyes plucked from peacock fans fuelling dreams of burning asphalt. Words kaleidoscope together. Houseflies see the world through gemstones. Used by permission of the author.
