The Berceuse appears in Act 2 of my grand opera, The Scarlet Princess. The opera is based on a 17th Century Kabuki play, The Scarlet Princess of Edo, which I discovered and had adapted by my librettist, David Henry Hwang. The opera is the sensuous and erotic tale of reincarnation, obsessive love, demonic possession, revenge, murder and redemption. It is populated by a colourful cast of Imperial figures, nuns, monks, villagers, outcasts, prostitutes, johns, ghosts and demons. In Act 2 Scene 2, Princess Sakura is reunited with her baby. She sings the Berceuse, an expressive song of tenderness and love. The Scarlet Princess was commissioned by The Canadian Opera Company in 1996 and received its full concert premiere on Tuesday April 23, 2002 in Toronto at the George Weston Recital Hall. In the original premiere performance, the role of Sakura was sung by Valdine Anderson.
