“This brief, dramatic, one movement work condenses a wide range of emotions into its compact form. From its quiet, skittish opening, the quartet passes through an agitated repeated note section that condenses, funnel-like, from the outer limits of the instruments to the mid-range F and Gb. Immediately spinning out from this point, the section evolved into rocket-like rising figures throughout the ensemble before settling into a monologue for the cello. In writing this work, I was pulled inexorably through this solo section to its rather hyper-romantic climactic point where all instruments have rejoined the cello. […] From here to the end of the piece there are suggestions of musical elements from the beginning…”

, 1994 Commandée par : Vancouver Recital Society « Cette pièce courte et dramatique en un mouvement condense une vaste gamme d’émotions en une forme compacte. Après un début tranquille et frivole, le quatuor traverse une section agitée de notes répétées qui, à la manière d’un entonnoir, dirige les sons des limites extérieures des instruments vers le registre moyen de fa et de sol bémol. Jaillissant immédiatement de cet épisode, ce passage se transforme en motifs ascendants qui fusent à travers l’ensemble avant de s’assagir sous forme d’un monologue pour le violoncelle. Lorsque je composais cette œuvre, j’étais entraînée inexorablement à travers ce passage en solo vers son sommet hyper-romantique où tous les instruments se joignent au violoncelle. […] Á partir de ce moment jusqu’à la fin de la composition, on trouve des suggestions d’éléments musicaux du début de l’œuvre. »
