Premiere
12/1/2002, Westdeutscher Rundfunk Köln; Ensemble Recherche
Spectrum 8 is the final work in a series or “family” of pieces for various instrumental ensembles, all of which use the same notation and playing procedures, and the same set of non-tempered pitches—harmonic partials of a very low fundamental. There are several basic formal types or “personalities” in this “family”, distinguished by different shapes determining the changing statistical properties of the energetic variables—temporal density and dynamic level—of a stochastic (or “constrained random”) process. Spectrum 8 was commissioned by and written for Westdeutscher Rundfunk, and was first performed by Ensemble Recherche on January 12, 2002 in Koln, Germany.
