"Entreat Me Not To Leave Thee" has been set in both Hebrew and English as a musical conversation among the forces of vocal solo, flute, choir and organ. The piece was inspired by several factors: the beauty and warmth of our new windows; the perceptive commentaries on the story of Ruth contained in a lovely little book which was kindly sent to me by Helen and Joe Berman: and the European-Ashkenazic and Babylonian cantillation modes for the Scroll of Ruth, which are wonderfully lyrical. Just as the new windows shine forth multiple messages which coalesce into one splendrous unit -- just as a book of sacred Jewish writings surrounds its main text with various commentaries -- so this new piece has a central melody which is embellished by musical comments from a flute and a contorial solo. While the piece is an original composition, these fragments are based upon the traditional cantillation described earlier.
