The inspiration behind 'The Victoria' string quartet came from sitting on a bench, by the ocean, with the inscription 'dedicated to Sydney and Margaret Glendenning, married 62 years, forever islanders'. The first movement tries to capture the peace and contentment found sitting on that bench, looking out over the ocean, with a calm, graceful melody passed between the instruments. The many ups and downs that must have gone with so many shared years together come with stronger dissonant chords that don't seem to resolve, only to fall back peacefully, later in the movement. The second movement describes the street markets. Neighbours coming together to buy local produce, linger over coffee, chat with the artisans selling their craft works. There are always dogs and children amongst the crowd. It starts quietly but builds as the neighbours gather. The eighth note grouping of 3 + 3 + 2, helps to give it energy. The third movement describes spending time in one of Victoria's many gardens. It depicts the subtle changes through the seasons, and captures the slow, peaceful pace of a garden. The last movement is about the annual Swiftsure sailing race, that happens every May. There is constant movement amongst the boats on the water, and the spectators on land. This is reflected in each of the instruments through 16th notes and rising melodic figures.
