The work started out in 2000 as an art song arrangement of the well-known song "Londonderry Air". This song uses as melody a traditional Irish one, which was later fitted to the words of Frederick Edward Weatherly (1910). In this version of Weatherly it has acquired an almost folksong status. The text is interpreted in different ways: 1) As a parting song of a woman to her lover who has been called up for service.2) A parting song by a parent of advanced age to a beloved son called up for military service (which is in my view more convincing, since the suggestion of death is not associated with the departing one, but the one that remains behind). My setting of this beautiful melody and words (with a mystique and ambiguity that fascinates), was originally conceived as an art song for high Baritone voice and piano. I soon added choral harmonization to the voice part (though it can still be sung as art song as well). The work is through-composed and each of the two verses receives a different treatment as suggested by the text. The role of the piano is to highlight the subtle shifting moods and text nuances through changes in texture, mode and motifs.
