Piano Concerto No. 5 "Ammolite" Millions of years of fossilization turned the shells of prehistoric sea creatures called ammonites into gorgeous multi-hued gemstones called "ammolite." These beautiful fossils and gemstones are highly valued for their mysterious magical qualities, and intensely glowing iridescent colours. Southern Alberta is the only location where soil conditions enabled such a unique fossilization. Inspired by all facets of ammonites and ammolite, the music depicts the surrounding mystery and delicate exquisiteness, as well as the powerful scope and vast magnitude of geologic time over many millennia that went into the creation of this magnificent phenomenon. There are musical portrayals of the prehistoric sea world with the ancient ammonite creatures propelling through the water, and references to legends and folklore associated with ammolite in native Indian and other cultures. This concerto was commissioned by Korite for a premiere performance with Heather Schmidt and the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra on May 21, 2009.
