A PROPOS DU CONCERT DE LA SEMAINE DERNIÈREfor solo piano and seven instruments (2013-15)This piece, the title of which could be translated as “With Regards to Last Week’s Concert”, was written during my residency at the Casa de Velázquez in Madrid, and it is also my first “concerto”. A solo piano is joined by a small ensemble consisting of two winds, two strings and percussion. In the first part of the work, which is mysterious and somewhat withdrawn in character, a sort of antiphony prevails: the strings are associated with the figures played in the left hand of the piano part, the winds with the right. The second half, which is decidedly non-linear, takes up and varies certain of the figures already heard; the music operates through interspersals, contrasts, and brief fragments of sound which are rapidly intertwined. The piece demonstrates my interest in the peculiar sound of high wind instruments (such as piccolo or Eb clarinet) playing mainly in the low register, as well as for unusual percussion, for instance a large suspended sleighbell, or a set of four hotel bells.
