Through the Ethereal Gate can be played in two different configurations. 1. The recommended way to play this work is to follow the instructions below using a “pitch only” theremin. a) Set up the theremin on a microphone stand so that the pitch antenna is parallel to the ground (see illustration in equipment set-up). b) The volume of the theremin is to be controlled with a volume pedal activated by the left foot. c) The saxophonist should position himself or herself so that the third finger of the right hand touches the center of the pitch antenna when the saxophone is at its highest angle (almost 90 degrees). d) The theremin pitch field should be adjusted so that it is on the edge of being activated when the saxophone is in normal playing position. 2. Alternatively, it is possible to perform Through the Ethereal Gate as a saxophone and theremin duet where the saxophonist uses the part in Bb and the thereminist uses the part in C.
