???? ??????? ??? ?????? ??? ????? ?????????? ????? ????, ??? ? ???’ ???? ??? ??? ?????... (John 14:16) This piece sprang from of two related sources of inspiration. The first was my desire to console my dear friend Louise Campbell, who was experiencing a series of losses. The work as a whole is designed to provide the performer and the listener with a kind of catharsis; the first movement is a portrait of the confusion and shock one feels after receiving devastating news, and the second movement presents a vision of a soul that has found peace after suffering loss. The second inspiration for this piece is the Holy Spirit, called the “Paraclete” (an ancient Greek word meaning “comforter” and “advocate”) in the Gospel and Epistles of John. The title of the first movement comes from Romans 8:26 “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words.” (RSV) The title of the second movement comes from Romans 8:15-16 “For you did not receive the spirit of slavery, to fall back into fear, but you have received the spirit of sonship. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” it is the Spirit himself bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God...” (RSV) The inarticulate and interrupted striving for expression in the first movement, and the tender lyricism of the second, are intended to suggest the images in these verses.
