Premiere
Premiere: May 9th 1992, Metropolitan Community Church, Toronto; Scott Wilkinson, cond.
"Why a requiem? As Brahms attempted to breathe new life into the requiem form by translating the text into the vernacular in his
Ein Deutsches Requiem,
and as Britten tried to answer the questions and salve the wounds of the post-war generation in his
War Requiem
, Wilkinson's
Requiem
attempts to provide an artistic response to today's health crisis. Surely we in the post-AIDS generation are crying out for a salving of our physical and mental wounds. In the summer of 1991, Wilkinson approached author Alberto Manguel to provide an original libretto. This collaboration took the two to Germany, where the piece was conceived and developed in an environment fraught with changes and new hope. Manguel's rendering of the text mirrors the composer's firm conviction that art should speak directly to a contemporary audience about contemporary issues. Believing that enough has been done by way of metaphor, the composer and librettist offer this new work, which speaks directly to issues of grieving and loss. As well as being uplifting, its aim is to offer a sense of hope and inspiration." - From May 9th 1992 program
