The Perfective Aspect of the Past Tense is based upon an earlier work for string quartet entitled Leaving a Place; the works share a sense of melancholy and nostalgia for places only half-remembered. There are two ideas at the core of this work: processes that create order (like the passage of time or the turning of the world) and the place of the individual voice within the larger whole. These issues are of course very important in the performance of chamber music, but on a deeper level are also reflective of the human condition. The Perfective Aspect of the Past Tense explores the relationship of the one to the whole, contrasting passages of multi-layered texture with passages that cast one instrument in a solo melodic role.-BL
