Garden Gnomes was privately commissioned in early 2004 by cellist and teacher Ian Hampton. The piece was written while in my last semester as an undergraduate student at Simon Fraser University. Upon its completion, I was invited to come and workshop the piece along with Ian, and a group of cello students at the Langley Community Music School, in May 2004. Another commission followed shortly for a companion piece, and in the fall of 2004, Metro Gnomes was composed, and premiered by an ensemble of four cellists at the University of British Columbia. It was later also workshopped along with Ian Hampton, at the LCMS, in May 2005. These two works were intended as educational pieces: they were both composed for four parts, with varying levels of difficulty. (Cello I- advanced; Cellos II/III- intermediate; Cello IV- beginner). Even the simpler parts contain some interesting techniques: glissandi, pizzicato (and left hand pizz.), tremolo, sul ponticello, natural harmonics, and knocking on the body of the instrument.
