"Sleeps Borderland", for Piccolo, 4 Alto Flutes, 2 Bass Flutes, 2 Contrabass Flutes, and Subcontrabass Flute was commissioned by Peter Sheridan. It's 2 episodic movements, while contrasted in mood, are related in some of their thematic material - as the ephemeral scenarios of a dream keep appearing and disappearing. Both movements were inspired by the liminal state of consciousness between sleeping and waking. The first movement, "Fugitive Worlds", explores tentative, fleeting inner worlds. Contrasted to this, the second movement, "Mind Parties", moves in and out of some raucous "party" scenes, finally lurching into a cacophonous overlapping of scenes, and vanishing into the distance.
