Beneath the Night's Sky was the second piece I composed during my first-year composition class at the University of British Columbia over a decade ago. Prior to university, I began my musical training as an oboist, and the oboe d’amore had always been my favourite instrument, despite how rarely it is called upon. The original version of Beneath (performed in 1998 with Catherine Redding singing the soprano part) was written for wordless soprano (meant to be sung in a very ethereal, almost Celtic manner) alongside the oboe d’amore and piano. It was simply meant to be a flowing and emotive piece that worked to combine and create a dialogue between the two beautiful colours of the pure vocals with the oboe. This new version, update in 2012, now includes text written at the behest of Dr. John L. Walker of Virginia Tech.
