For violoncello and tape. Ms (photocopy); original score in returned to composer 1995.
If the work is performed in a large space and with a large sound system, the cello should be amplified so that it can match the level of the tape. However if the work is performed in a small space with a small sound system, the cello can perform work acoustically (without amplification).
ABBNF (1990) was commissioned in 1988 by cellist Shauna Rolston. It was not until the summer of 1990 that I felt ready and able to write to the piece.
I visited Banff on August 1st, 1990 and recorded environmental sounds with a Digital Audio Tape (DAT) recorder.
ABBNF (1990) is an ecological portrait of the relationship between mankind and nature inspired by the beauty, fragility and power of Banff National Park, which was my home from 1987 to 1990 and is also the home town of cellist Shauna Rolston.
The cellist interacts with the four soundscpaes of Banff:
Southwest ridge of Tunnel Mountain Tunnel Mountain Road, near the Banff Centre Bow River, near the town of Banff Cemetery path from the Banff Centre to Banff
The tape was realized in November, 1990 at the studio of Christian Calon in Montréal. Special thanks to Shauna Rolston, Isobel and Tom Rolston, Christian Calon, Dianne Pearce, Laurie Radford, Jean-François Denis, Ned Bouhalassa, the Banff Centre and the Canada Council for their help and support.
