During the spring of 1995, after assigning a series of short 'working-etudes' to my composition class at the Eastman School, I decided to attempt one myself. The labor quickly got out of hand, however, and the piece expanded into a (small) concerto for solo harp and instruments. Unlike the standard design, the concertino is in five sections, the first serving as an annunciatory cadenza for the soloist, introducing all of the material to be further developed in each successive piece. It leads directly into the second movement, where a recurring harp ritornello alternates with languid melodies for the accompaniment. The following three sections are in modifies A-B-A forms. The two fast movements (No.3 and No.5) are perpetual motion studies in compound and simple time respectively, both using the tritone as a building block. They are separated by two calmer songs: No.2 a rubato 'ballroom dance', and No.4 a gentle 'cradle song', both using a more tonal ambience. The predominant role is naturally assigned to the harp, and it seemed to be a felicitous choice to honor my wife Elizabeth on the occasion of both her 60th birthday and our 40th wedding anniversary. While the resulting composition has a relatively light dispodition, the dexterity and ensemble playing required from the performers is considerable, in keeping with 'chamber concerto' format. SUMMERWOOD is approximately 19 minutes in duration. The score is dedicated to the American harpist Kathleen Bride, who generously gave of her time, expertise, and good counsel during the creative toil. The work was completed in September of 1995 and slightly revised in fall 1993 in Fairport, New York. S.H.
