Additional Information
1.Elegy -- 2.Simulacra
In memory of James Eric Work (1919 - 1990). Lumen takes its title from the Latin word for "light", a word which carries the normal meaning as well as the poetic sense of 'light of the eye', 'clearness', and 'insight'. Conceived and written during the summer of 1990, the music is an attempt by the composer to come to an understanding of the courage required to face the powers of darkness. Recent images emanating from Beijing, Berlin, Soweto, and Oka, as well as a personal grieving, have served as a background for the creation of the piece. Musically, the work has two movements. The first, 'Elegy', is slow and meditative. It features a duet for the two violas and a solo passage for the cello. The second, "Simulacra', is fast and fierce, and it features solo passages for both of the violins. Both movements are variations upon the same musical fragment. Buried within the music are the cries of the loon, the grey wolf, and the red-tailed hawk. In terms of their character, the movements could perhaps be described by these lines from a Dylan Thomas poem: "Do not go gentle into that good night," and "Rage, rage against the dying of the light." The work was commissioned by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in honour of the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Orford String Quartet. It is dedicated to the members of the Orford String Quartet: Andrew Dawes, Kenneth Perkins, Sophie Renshaw, and Desmond Hoebig.
