Premiere
10/04/1986 Open Space Gallery Victoria Open Space New Music Ensemble Conductor: John Abram
Serenade was begun in 1984, and an initial version was completed in 1986. I re-wrote several of the movements in 1992, and made minor changes in 2010. The inspiration came from French and English music—Berlioz has always been a favourite of mine, and I find the first entrance of the solo Viola in Harold en Italie, accompanied as it is by harp and clarinets, to be one of his most delightful orchestrations. Alongside the older French master are the exquisite pieces by Debussy, Koechlin, Ravel, Ropartz and Roussel, all in the manner of serenades. My teacher, Roger Marsh wrote a companion piece for the Ravel (he added another flute and clarinet to his Two Movements for Harp and Ensemble) and I wanted to do something in a similar vein. Additionally, Vic Hoyland's piece Seranade made a profound impression on me, though I heard it only once. I also wished to serenade my sweetheart, Barbara Sutherland, to whom the piece is dedicated.
