Pine Needles is partly inspired by a childhood memory: While hiking through the woods, we came across a reforested area where the trees had been planted in perfect rows. This was an amusing discovery for a child who had never heard of the concept of a man made forest. While composing the piece this summer, the image of the even placement of trees and the ground underneath which had been carpeted with pine needles seemed to be inspire the metric repeated notes...or perhaps it was the dark "woody" timbres of the marimba and woodblocks that conjured up this memory. The premiere was on October 31 at the Toronto Music Gallery on a solo recital by Aiyun Huang. My thanks to David Jaeger Aiyun Huang for commissioning this work.
