The original German text by Franck (1618-1677)was set to a version of the chorale, Schmucke dich, O liebe Seele, by J. Cruger (1598-1662) the most important chorale composer of the mid-17th century. J.S. Bach used this chorale in many of his vocal works. Phrases from the 20th century hymn version are adapted in this setting.
