World of Light explores poetic, philosophical, theological and musical interpretations of eternity, and its relationship to time, God and death. The chosen texts are by three authors: Boethius, a Roman consul and philosopher; Thomas Aquinas, a thirteenth century Italian Dominican priest and theologian; and the Welsh metaphysical poet Henry Vaughan (1621 – 1695). Two Henry Vaughan excerpts form the centrepiece of the composition. Vaughan’s startling and beautiful visions of eternity are revealed against a backdrop of human suffering and violence. The constant references to light, shadow and darkness in the poetry serve as catalysts for the expression of musical visions. The piece begins and ends with two Latin excerpts. The first from Boethius is part of “The Consolation of Philosophy,” an original and groundbreaking philosophical dialogue written in prison prior to his execution. The epilogue uses the portion of Aquinas’ “Summa Theologiae” that answers questions about God and eternity.
