1. The French Connection The harmonies, reminiscent of the French Impressionist composers, are a mixture of tertian and quartal harmonies. The quiet opening leads to bird calls and a shimmering, chromatic descent. Strong chordal, syncopated harmonies lead to a slower, very expressive section. This leads back to the opening in a different key. There is a recap. of all the previous material and it ends with a short coda. 2. Animal Dreamland This movement is based on a six-note motive. It is used in many different ways: melodically, harmonically and contrapuntally. There are four sections: the first is loud, quick and detached, the second is slower and dreamy, the third is mysterious with quiet tremulos and the fourth is very loud and heavy, like elephants clomping along. The sections are repeated in a different order with variations. 3. Souvenirs nostalgiques It begins with a bolero rhythm and a singing melody in Eb. It modulates to Gb for the middle section, which is faster, very loud and energetic. Eventually the bolero rhythm returns in Ab and modulates back to the original key for the coda. 4. Jubilee Celebration Plainsong, adapted from "Veni Creator" opens this piece and reoccurs several times within it. A joyful section follows. Then the plainsong returns, accompanied by a simple bass line. The joyful part comes back and leads to a lilting, folksong-like melody with a harp-like bass. Then comes a chordal section in the Dorian mode. All the sections return and the movement ends joyfully.
