Premiere
1990, Brookfield Zoo, Brookfield, Illinois Exsultate Trio: Maria Lagios; soprano, Phyllis Adams; harp, Monty Adams; flute
These songs were commissioned by the Exsultate Trio for a series of concerts presented at the Brookfield Zoo in Illinois. I have tried to capture the spirit of each poem using different twentieth-century compositional techniques, such as modes of limited transposition, the twelve-tone pitch series, extended techniques or sound painting and minimalism. Each song uses a different technique: “The Creation of the World” is based on two interlocking augmented chords or sets; “Jellyfish Stew” uses an octatonic mode; “Batty” uses twelve-tone procedures; “The Unassuming Owl” is a sound piece; and “Peckin'“ is a short recitative leading to “The Creation of Fish, Fowl and Cattle,” which is in a minimalist, tonal style.
