For Starters was commissioned by the University of Toronto Alumni Association in 1984, for the installation of the University's twelfth president, George E. Connell. The ceremony took place in Convocation Hall on 16 November of that year, and the piece was performed by the Faculty of Music Brass Ensemble conducted by Stephen Chenette. Noting musical connections both with Dr Connell's historical position and his initials, I based my work on a twelve-note set beginning with the pitches G, E, and C, which happen to form a major triad. Noting the acoustic properties of the hall, I designed a spatial arrangement with trumpets lined across the front of the stage, horns and trombones in opposite balconies, and the tuba seated in the middle of the audience. As in some previous compositions, I enjoyed the opportunity to apply the findings of Henry Brant, Charles Ives, and others, where music is heard across space at different levels and varied distances. A performance (31 March 1995) in the Atrium of the CBC Broadcast Centre, Toronto, by players of the Hannaford Street Silver Band and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jukka-Pekka Saraste, was issued on a CD in 2002 (CBC Records PSCD 2028-5). Feeling that this four-minute piece needed a couple of companion pieces, in 1994 I produced Mid-Riff and the following year a draft version of Wrap-up. The latter was left incomplete when I put it aside to work on other projects, and I only returned to it in 2007. The three pieces all employ the same set, and all call for the same deployment of the ensemble.
