Premiere
Wolfville, NS Denton Auditorium 11 Feb 2007 Derek Charke, flute; Mark Adam, marimba
The 'Three Duets' are essentially three impromptus for flute and marimba based on improvisations by Derek Charke from early 2006. Alternatively, a violin can be substituted for the flute line. (If a violin is used, ignore the diamond note heads.) The three duets can be performed in any order, or as individual pieces. Movement one begins with the flute accompanying the marimba. At the double bar rolls are reversed and the flute takes over the melody. Except for passages marked Molto Espressivo this movement is to be played in a dry manner. Pay attention to dynamics. Movement two consists of constant sixteenth notes, and shouldn’t be performed too fast. It should have the effect of ‘swirling’ around and around. Movement three, the epilogue, is lyrical and should be performed slowly and with much rubato. 'Three Duets' were premiered at the 2007 Acadia New Music Festival, Shattering the Silence in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.
