I Scherzo - Cantabile melodies embellished with grace notes soar over repeated note figures in the accompaniment. The rhythm is characterized by irregular phrases and changing time signatures. II Interlude - The opening sets a serious, plaintive mood. The horn seems determined to keep the sombre mood, but the clarinet, oboe, bassoon and flute introduce short playful fragments. At one point the horn solo is interrupted by the oboe. With the continuation of the horn solo, the other instruments resume the opening serious mood. III Fugue - The tempo is quick, the mood, energetic.
