Text by E.J. Pratt THE HISTORY OF JOHN JONES The sun never shone, And the rain could not fall On a steadier man than John. A holy man and honest withal, A virtuous man was John. His mates never heard From his guarded lip A surly or thund'rous roar, But once while he strutted Aboard his ship, When he lost his pipe he swore. John was temperate in all his ways, He never drank but on Thanksgiving days. Never on a summer fishing trip Would he allow the smell on board his ship. The moon never rose and the sun never shone On a kinder man than John, For righteous was he in both thought and deed; There was no better Christian than John. He was good to his dog, he was good to his cat, And his love went to his horse He loved The Lord and he loved the Book And he loved his Church of course. John was righteous in both thought and act; He loved his dog and idolized his cat. What's more his neighbours knew as well as that, He loved his wife, as a matter of fact. Now one fine day it occurred to John's mates That his last great cramp was on; So they called for the doctor but nothing he did Could appease the rattling John. He had broken his back upon the oar, He had dried his last boat-load of cod, And nothing was left for poor John any more, But to drift to the harbour of God.
