Mahogany was inspired in part by two very different musical sources. The precise interlocking rhythms, and contour of melodic lines references early 20th century Afro-Cuban music, while the notion of working in vertical space (here, exploring nearly the full compass of the cello's wide range) was drawing partly upon early 20th century Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu. Since the piece was written for three of the same instrument, I was interested in exploring not only the inherent similarities and ability to blend the three voices, but also contrasting more subtle differences in timbre/range, and dynamic shading. Mahogany was written specifically for a concert featuring works for three celli, and received its premiere on 27 August, 2005, by Sue Round, Joseph Elworthy, and Ariel Barnes, at Douglas College Theatre, New Westminster, B.C., Canada.
