17/06/2008 Composer's Home Kingston, Ontario Wolf Tormann, solo cello
Ecce tu pulchra es is a single movement work for solo cello. The work was commissioned by Dr. Michael Stephen Cummings in 2007, for his wife, Alison Cummings, in celebration of their fifteenth wedding anniversary. Michael is a professor in the Classics Department at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, where John Burge also teaches. As Alison has always enjoyed listening to the cello, Michael asked John to compose an expressive work as an anniversary gift. The resultant piece is somewhat rhapsodic in structure but continually returns to the neighbour-note figure of the first three notes often transposed to different registers. The work makes complete use of all ranges of the instrument. Of particular note are the transparent passages for natural harmonics which have a bell-like effect at times. The title of the work was selected by Michael and is taken from the Bible’s Song of Solomon. The use of Latin connects to Michael’s area of study and research and translates as, “Behold, thou art fair.” Many composers have been inspired by this text and the words have been set to music numerous times. Commissioned by: Dr. Michael Cummings
