Premiere
Vancouver Orpheum Annex 12 Mar 2017 Borealis String Quartet
String Quartet #5 Land and Water was composed for the Borealis String Quartet and a concert they programmed based on Landscape and the North. In preparation for writing the piece, I considered the painting of Lawren Harris and an exhibition of his work called 'The Idea of North' which I had viewed at the Art Gallery of Ontario. I also considered Glenn Gould's radio documentary/artistic work by the same title. The work is not programmatic in any traditional sense, although there are references to actual personal experience as well as to ideas of landscape and the contrast of bleak beauty and harsh reality that most Canadians are familiar with. Dead Tree over Spring Creek does reference the contrast of life/death and stillness and movement present in many of Lawren Harris paintings. The title of the second movement refers to a rather harrowing nature experience I had while attempting unsuccessfully to have an idyllic retreat to a nature reserve called Holy Isle, off the coast of Arran Island in Scotland. The third movement relates in part to an experience with a raccoon I had on an icy beach on northern Long Island, New York while living as a graduate student there. The last movement Sunlight on Mountain Peak both references several Lawren Harris paintings in the Rockies and my own experiences over many years in Banff, Alberta.
