Premiere
Toronto Music Gallery 4 May 2009 Evergreen Club
This work was originally composed in 1985 as music for a collaboration with Erica Runstrom called The Greenhouse. She created puppets, sculpture and other imagery together with choreography. Claudia Moore danced in the premiere. Danielle Bellac danced in a subsequent performance in St. John's at the Sound Symposium. This reworking of The Greenhouse is to help mark the 25th anniversary of the Evergreen Club, an ensemble I founded. The current director Blair Mackay requested a purely concert version. The result brings much new composition to bear on the original themes. Only Act IV remains close to it's original form and it too has been tampered with! I have taken liberty with the subtitles of each movement, even in assigning theatrical references, but I wanted to keep a reference to the theatrical origins of the work while giving myself some freedom: Act I: A Knock on the Door Act II: Arrival of the Puppets Interlude: Inside Looking Out Act III: Dance Amongst the Tulips Act IV: Outside Looking In
