The poems of Emily Dickinson have meaning for all generations. Her short poems are dense distillations of a remarkable range of emotions. The poems I have chosen for ELEGY have a special resonance for me and reflect the poet's and my contemplation on the eternal nature of life and death. In ELEGY, songs 1-5 probe and illuminate attitudes toward death. The work begins with an affirmation of individuality and life, Me!, and proceeds to the tentative acceptance of I Stepped, the calm inevitability of Because I Could not Stop for Death, the poignancy of The Last Night and the drama of There Came a Wind Like a Bugle. Lux Aeturna is an instrumental bridge to the remaining five poems that present the transfiguration of the spirit. ELEGY is dedicated to my daughter, Amy, a valiant victim of ALS. December 15, 2008
