In Winterseen, fellow musicians are invited directly into the composer’s creative process. At the outset, time values are not specified but left to the performers’ discretion, while the ending incorporates notated material derived from an improvisation session with flutist Jean-Guy Brault. This collaborative approach emerged from a series of interviews with performers, conducted while studying with Michel Longtin at the Université de Montreal (1987-89). The piece is intended to evoke the transformation of Winter to Spring. The opening “Winter” section utilizes material derived from both Starry Night and Planar 9 (1980), giving it an austere but serene, crystalline quality. In contrast, “Spring” accelerates into a purposeful exuberance with jazz-inspired ostinati. The point of seasonal transition provides the focus of the work - an expansive flute solo with electronic enhancement that exudes a shimmering resonance. How appropriate to the miracle of the moment when the entire world is vibrant with a sense of infinite possibility. Commissioned by: Espace Musique Concert Society
