Premiere
Commissioned by Soundstreams Canada (with funding support from the Canada Council). It was premiered by Lawrence Cheney, oboe, the Elmer Iseler Singers and Soundstreams Ensemble directed by Elmer Iseler, at Grace Church-on-the-Hill, Toronto, Canada on 4 April 1995.
Inspired by the experience of attending early-morning Mass in several ancient monasteries in Greece, Heirmos is the composer’s musical response to the complex emotions the ‘timelessness’ of the ritual aroused.
