Fragments was commissioned by Canadian clarinetist Don Ross, Saint Crispin’s Chamber Ensemble and New Works Calgary. Funding for the commission was provided by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. The idea behind this work was to have a composition for two performers playable by assorted duo combinations of treble clef melody instruments. Fragments was also created so that contiguous segments of it could be performed as extracts or “examples”. I further decided that the work would also be modular in that it could begin in any of the 32 numbered measures, with a full performance consisting of circling back to the measure selected as the starting point. Thus, with multiple performance possibilities (including extracts), the title Fragments seemed to me quite apropos. Each measure needed to feel like a complete work with a definite beginning and end – a minute piece unto itself. As such, almost by accident, this work became another of my compositions based on fragments and interruptions (e.g. Exit to Your Left, Microduet No. 8, Nervous Disorder, Splinters, String Quartet No. 1, Symphony No. 1). Additionally each measure of the 2nd group of 16 measures is a variant of its counterpart in the 1st 16 measures. No matter where one starts the 16 + 16 measure balance always works out symmetrically. The premiere on November 3, 2006, in Calgary, Alberta, was for clarinet and Celtic harp. The harp part is, therefore, monophonic in texture and treated specifically as a melodic instrument. For performance on other instruments certain pitches may need to undergo octave displacement. Treble reading instruments that sound in the bass (e.g. bass clarinet, tenor saxophone) are also permitted. Both performers read from the score. Scores have been produced in concert C, BI, EI and for the original Celtic harp. Fragments was composed between August 29 and September 2, 2006.
