Gat is a composition for solo viola that combines formal elements and performance practices of traditional Indian music with Western twelve-tone composition technique. A gat is the composed portion of Indian music that combines a strict rhythmic component, the tala, with a melodic component, the raga (in this case a twelve-tone row). Imitating the form of an Indian composition, Gat begins slowly and freely. gains a regular rhythmic structure, and gradually accelerates to a fiery climax. Glissandi and open-string double stops are used to suggest sitar performance practices such as note bending, sympathetic string vibrations, and drone.
