When Brennan Szafron approached me in 2008 to write a Triptych based on southern hymn tunes for his February 2009 Sundays at 3 recital in Edmonton, I was delighted to take up this challenge. The Edmonton Centre of the Royal Canadian College of Organists, who created the Sundays at 3 organ recital series in the early 1980's, initiated and underwrote this commission. Brennan suggested a number of southern hymn tunes to choose from. A binding quality to the tunes finally chosen (Holy Manna, Beach Spring and Foundation) is their pentatonic modality with very similar cadence structures without leading tones. In all three tunes, the sequence of notes D-E-G appears, which serves as one of the unifying elements in the Triptych. Movement I (Holy Manna) is playful (somewhat reminiscent of Fife and Drum music) and elements from all three tunes are combined in the 43 measure introduction. The second movement (Beach Spring) is more quiet and introspective and can be used with a number of texts (traditional and new) associated with this tune. The final movement (Foundation) is a festive Toccata with the hymn tune appearing somewhat majestically in the bass in the opening and closing sections.
