One of the most touching and meaningful experiences for a teacher is to hear of the success and continuing work of one's former students. Accordingly, when I retired from academia in 1999, I was pleased to accept an invitation from Bill Lipman, Professor of Music at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas, to compose a piece for him; we had worked together during the mid-1970's at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. The resultant work is a set of seven brief vignettes written to exploit the musicianship and dexterity of Mr.Lipman(on both B-flat and E-flat soprano clarinets) and his cohorts. The overall design of the individual sections is very straight-forward. Each of the odd-numbered (rapid, jocose) movements predominantly alternate tutti ensemble rhythms with varying short 'takeoff choruses' interspersed for individual players. Their basic genesis largely comes from recollections - often dream-like - of the 1940's-50's jazz/pop ambience in which I lovingly labored during my youth. Furthermore, it is as if one extended fast movement was sliced apart into four 'bits' - not unlike using a film editor's scissors - with each segment possessing its own character, but being constantly varied, while the overall tempi progressively accelerate, bringing the suite to the vociferous close. On the other hand, the even-numbered (folk-like, often naive) movements grow increasingly slower. They all commence with the same two pitches (B-Csharp), but attain divergent natures: No.2 a melancholy waltz (solo violin), No.4 a dirge-like lament (solo cello), and No.6 a plaintive hymn (solo clarinet) ovet static chordal string sonorities. These three solemn 'prayers' were written in memory of, and as homage to, personal composer friends who recently died: Barbara Pentland (1912 -2000), Martin Mailman (1932-2000), and William Albright (1941-1998). SHORT CUTS is approximately twenty-one minutes in duration and was completed in Ormond-by-the-Sea, Florida in March of 2001. The score was commissioned by, and affectionately dedicated to, Bill Lipman, who gave the first performance during the 2002-2003 concert season. S.H.
