Night Rainbow for solo piano (2007)
Night Rainbow has two meanings, both of which are relevant to the inspiration of the piece. One meaning is an actual night rainbow, also known as a lunar bow. Over a century ago, one of the best locations to see night rainbows was reportedly at Niagara Falls. Today, night rainbows can no longer be seen at this location because of all the man-made lighting in the area. However, as late as the 1850’s and 1860’s, night tours of Niagara Falls were scheduled for viewing the night rainbows when the moon was full and high enough to reflect light into the mists of the falls.
Night Rainbow can also refer to the “spirit” rainbow. Known as “Na Po Mokole” in Hawaiian culture, this night rainbow refers to our ancestors who have passed on to the spirit realm.
I was first inspired to create music associated with the idea of night rainbows when I did an improvisation with this title in a New Works Calgary concert in 2005, in memory of my grandfather ”Daddo” who passed away on December 22, 2004. Over the last two years, the general idea of night rainbows remained present in my mind, and on the occasion of composing this new work, I decided to revisit the concept of Night Rainbow from an entirely new perspective. This current piano piece is musically completely unrelated to the live improvisation I performed two years earlier, and it reflects a very different use of style, structure and thematic material. Night Rainbow also contains some musical elements that I have never used in any of my previous piano works, including an extended opening for left hand alone, in a recitative like style without metre.
