Premiere
16/2/1990, Amrican Saxophone Alliance Region 9 Conference, Calgary AB; Medicine Hat Saxophone Quartet, Lyle Rebbeck director.
The Symphonette for Sotto Voce Saxophones was commissioned by and written for the Medicine Hat Saxophone Quartet, Lyle Rebbeck director in 1990. As the title suggests, the work was an attempt to explore the use of the quieter dynamic ranges of the instruments. Although louder dynamics are called for at times, the softer dynamics predominate. The descriptive movement titles, in addition to their programmatic implications, are meant to suggest subdued dynamic levels with many passages performed almost at a whisper. The fairly high dissonant level of the composition's texture is mitigated by the effective blending of the saxophone ensemble.
