the notion of motion(2010)violin, percussion, multichannel audio signal processingLaurie RadfordÎnertiaTrajectory FrictionSlo MoVelocityStasisSound is motion. Even a perceptually static sound is in constant vibration, perturbing the sonic world around us, seeking out our attention, engaging our memory and imagination.Motion is life. Vibration and fluctuation animate, trigger and make relevant the daily events of our existence, the subtle and grandiose diversions that bear us onwards.A notion of the motion around us is part of our conscious and unconscious actions and reactions, the instigation to strive for the circularity of breathing, of revolution and evolution.the notion of motion combines two instrumentalists with live audio signal processing and an eight-channel diffusion system. The instrumental sounds are processed in real-time as well as being recorded, transformed, combined, fragmented and then re-integrated with the instruments. The processed and recorded signals animate the performance space through various trajectories via the eight-channel circular diffusion system.the notion of motion was commissioned by John Lowry and Rod Squance of the Land’s End Ensemble.
