Premiere
19/10/2010, Philip T. Young Recital Hall, Victoria; Trio sTREga
In 1967, Glenn Gould produced the radio documentary The Idea of North. It explores the solitary and difficult lives of those who inhabit Canada's northern regions. The documentary unfolds through the narratives of several individuals who experienced the North first-hand. The speakers' voices – just like musical voices in a Bach fugue – enter successively, overlap in polyphonic interaction, and eventually fade out, in what Gould called "contrapuntal" radio. Throughout most of the hour-long documentary, in the background one hears the quiet, soothing sound of the rumbling of a train, akin to a musical ostinato: after all, Glenn Gould first experienced the North by boarding the Muskeg Express from Winnipeg to Churchill in 1964. The North Imagined is my personal tribute to Glenn Gould, who has been one of the guiding stars in my life as a musician. Like Glenn Gould's radio documentary, my piece contemplates the Canadian arctic regions. It brings together a variety of musical symbols, objects and images, which in my mind are connected with the "idea of North." The piece begins and ends with an onomatopoeic rendition of a train ride, with the monotonous, rhythmical sound of the tracks, the occasional squeaking of the rails, the rush of the air, and even the penetrating train horn. In the second section, the violin melody evokes a sense of solitude, inhabiting the uppermost limits of its range. In the far distance, several octaves below it, looms the piano, with its ominous, dark sighs, and the clarinet, which plays fast, almost inaudible figurations resembling the sound of wind on the tundra. The music of Bach, or rather an impression thereof, quite suddenly crystallizes out of the fog. It consists of fragments from the Goldberg Variations (and particularly Variations XIII and XXV), which were the representative item of Glenn Gould's repertoire. Thus in my piece Gould himself becomes a part of the idea of North. Bach’s music undergoes a metamorphosis and leads into the next episode, quoting a well-known Inuit lullaby. In the second half of the piece, one more symbol of the North joins the musical fabric of the piece, though in a less conspicuous manner: an excerpt from The Northwest Passage by legendary Canadian singer Stan Rogers, who died tragically – and heroically – onboard Air Canada Flight 797 when it crashed 1983. His strong, resonant voice is said to have guided other passengers to safety following the plane's emergency landing. The North Imagined - a Tribute to Glenn Gould was commissioned by the Trio sTREga, and composed in Toronto in 2010.
