Tom Robbins is an American author known for his “seriocomedies” with wildly poetic stories. His novels, chock full of silliness, playfulness, and themes of joy and determination, have inspired this piece with three text fragments: i. Now he discovered children, and the discovery blew blasts of sugar into every chamber of his heart (Jitterbug Perfume) ii. Outlaws, like lovers, poets, and tubercular composers who cough blood onto piano keys, do their finest work in the slippery rays of the moon. (Still Life With Woodpecker) iii. On the planet Argon redheads were considered evil…Red hair is caused by sugar and lust. (Still Life With Woodpecker) Jitterbug Perfume is a story that spans centuries, covering the origin of kissing, the recent whereabouts of ancient gods like Pan, the quest for immortality, and of course, the ultimate perfume - with a base of beet pollen. Still Life with Woodpecker tells the story of an outlaw who falls in love with a deposed environmentalist European princess – two fierce redheads whose love affair culminates bombastically. Each movement aims to capture the mood implicit within these text fragments, sometimes supported with text and sometimes purely musical. i blasts of sugar into every chamber of his heart ii like lovers, poets, and tubercular composers iii red hair is caused by sugar and lust
