The individual movements of this programmatic work are written in a style chosen to suit each title. The first movement is quite melodic and modal with traditional rhythms and phrasing. Movement three becomes atonal, and movement four is written in a rhythmically free style which allows for aggressive dialogue between flute and piano. The piece gradually returns to its opening peaceful mood as is suggested in the movement titles.
