Kiskatinaw Songs
on poems by Susan Musgrave When I discovered these poems in the late 1970's, I realized that they had everything a composer looks for in a song text: colourful language, rhythmic vitality, and compelling dramatic content. They begged to be set to music. The result was an eclectic approach, ranging from the use of shifting meters which mimic the twists and turns of Musgrave's quirky rhythms to totally free sections where the voice and piano function independently. Some passages have a simple modal feel while others veer off into dissonance and bitonality. After 30 odd years, it was necessary to update the work slightly – mainly sharpening up the notation with the welcome aid of a computer – but essentially it remains the same.Musgrave's world of of the Pacific North West with its shabby coastal villages, sea witches, mystical incantations and primordial violence continues to haunt me, and remarkably, the music still rings true, generating the same keenness and excitement that I felt when the songs were first written. -Sid Robinovitch, September, 2014
