Premiere
25 October 2009, Festival Transit, Leuven, Belgium Julie-Anne Derome, violin; Laurie Radford, audiovisual processing.
…flock and fill the line and circle with pulse, sway and spiral, track the wisp and flourish bound to the current, to the flow and curve of wind-thrust and wave-crash as past fills present… Tracking 1 -- Edge 1 -- Riff 1 -- Edge 2 -- Riff 2 -- Tracking 2 A work for six instruments and digital signal processing, Flocking Filling Tracking, from 2006 employed three concepts, related to each word in the title of the work, as controlling concepts and procedures for the various episodes of the piece. Three subsequent works concentrate on one of the words/concepts and explore it more fully: Flocking (2007) (8 flutes and digital signal processing), Filling (2007) (video and electroacoustic music), and Tracking (2009) (solo violin and digital signal processing). Tracking explores a variety of sonic and visual situations and relationships that arise from the concept of ‘tracking’: pursuit, observation, following, location, focus, spacing. The interaction of violin soloist and real-time signal processing of sound, movement and image, and the tracking of performance gesture, sound and light gives rise to angular lines, complex textures, spatial trajectories and a dynamic, visceral environment within which the soloist negotiates the hierarchy of follower and followed, tracker and tracked. Tracking was written for violinist Julie-Anne Derome for performance at Festival Transit 2009 in Leuven, Belgium.
