Requiem for a Penny
is the result from a poet-composer collaboration facilitated by the 2014 Art Song Lab, part of the Vancouver International Song Institute. Young Canadian poets and composers were paired to create a piece for voice and piano. In this “strictly Canadian content” theme,
Requiem for a Penny
remarks on the discontinuation of the penny, which was phased out in 2013. Taking a cool and steely tone, the piece cheekily plays on melodrama to over exaggerate the “tragic” loss of the penny – by the end of the song, it is clear that nostalgia is the motivating factor, with the repetition of “a thing of the past.”
