Microexpressions, for alto trombone and piano, builds on one of my current compositional pursuits – to musically explore the essence of individual emotions. The original idea was influenced by the psychological concept of microexpressions, which are brief, involuntary facial expressions shown on the face of humans according to emotions experienced. Lasting only a 1/25 to 1/15 of a second, these expressions are almost imperceptible to the naked eye, and betray universal human emotions like surprise, contempt, happiness, shame, etc. While most facial expressions are controlled and tailored to a given social situation, microexpressions are abbreviated flashes of emotional honesty. I find the concept both fascinating, beautiful and perhaps slightly cruel; emotions will find some way of coming to the surface, no matter how much self-control an individual may have at masking them. Musically, I envisioned the material as mainly projecting externalized emotions (ie. the ones we control), and it is only in brief moments where a new emotional reality emerges – a microexpression. I chose alto trombone for several reasons, including its agility at a high register, its bright tone, and its unique limitations, and also to create new Canadian solo repertoire for an often overlooked instrument. This piece was produced with support from the City of Toronto through the Toronto Arts Council, and was written for trombonist Dale Sorensen, a fantastic musician and fellow islander.
